In the 1980s, the neoliberal globalization process had impacts on social, economic, and political structures triggering a debate about so-called old and new social movements. This debate, which occupied the social movements literature for a long time, has reached a somewhat consensus on the idea that there had been a continuity rather than a sharp break between the two movements. However, both theories fall short to explain some social movement profiles, especially seen in Latin American countries. One of these cases is Argentina, a country where the social movements have been very active through since the second half of the 20th century. Contrary to the distinction in the theoretical debate, social movements in Argentina embody both class-based and identity-based movements. In this context, the thesis aims to analyse the social movements in Argentina (from the 1980s to the present). While doing this, it reveals the specificities of the movements in Argentina by considering the actors, actions, forms of struggle and purposes of the movements. To understand the casespecific aspects of social movements in Argentina, the ways in which the two types of social movement have intersected in practice will be explored, using a rather flexible theoretical framework which would allow a more comprehensive analysis of the movements. In this thesis, it is claimed that there have been significant changes in the class structure under the influence of neoliberal market and employment policies along with the technological revolution. In the course of these changes the class-based movement has not been completely replaced by identity-based movements. By way of this argument, the thesis opposes the perspectives that claim that new social movements’ aim has been limited with social change without targetting a change of the state power.
