One of the most practical methods of comprehending historical periods is to study their buildings. Topkapı and Dolmabahçe Palaces have potential for his end. In the 19th century, transformations occurred worldwide, and the Ottoman Empire endeavored to adapt to these changes to maintain its existence. Therefore, it experienced architectural and socio-political reforms. The transition from the Topkapı Palace to the Dolmabahçe Palace is a symbol of this transformation. The political approach and social life were greatly altered and were reflected in the palace refurbishings and protocols. Furthermore, ceremonies and ceremonial spaces were redesigned. This thesis aims to examine the impacts of the transition on the palace architecture and its usage. The relationships between architecture, ceremonies and protocols are surveyed through selected venues.
