İbrahim Ferit Öktem

İbrahim Ferit Öktem was born on June 5, 1928 in Erkilet Kayseri. After completing his primary education here, he completed his secondary education as a free boarding school and graduated from Adana Boys' High School in 1947. He started his higher education at ITU Faculty of Electricity, but after passing an exam that year, he was sent to France for education. After completing his undergraduate degree in mathematics at the University of Paris in 1954, he started his doctorate in Theoretical Physics and received his doctorate in 1961. He worked as a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) between 1959 and 1961. In 1962, he was appointed as a lecturer at METU Department of Theoretical Physics. He conducted scientific research at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies between 1963 and 1964. He was appointed Assistant Professor in 1965, Associate Professor in 1972, and Professor in 1978. He served as Head of the Department of Theoretical Physics between 1966 and 1968. He conducted research and published articles on the theory of general relativity at METU Physics department. During his academic career, he served as Head of the Department of Mathematical Physics many times. In addition, he pioneered the design of new courses and their introduction to students. Prof. Dr. Ferit Öktem retired from METU Physics department in 1995.
