Metric-affine formulation of gravity is an extension of Einstein´s theory of General Relativity (GR), in which the metric tensor serves as the only dynamical field of the theory (metric formulation). In metric-affine formulation, the Levi-Civita connection is replaced by a more general one with the inclusion of torsion and non-metricity tensors. In this thesis, we analyze f(R), scalar-tensor, and Chern-Pontryagin modifications of GR´s Einstein-Hilbert action in the metric-affine formulation. We also provide a method to compute Chern-Simons-like current densities from the higher even dimensional Chern-Pontryagin topological densities.
