Cevat Erder, one of the first names that come to mind when it comes to conservation and conservation education on an international scale, was born in Karagümrük, Istanbul, in 1931. Mr. Erder received his primary education in Karagümrük; He completed his secondary education at Saint-Benoit High School. He dropped out of his law education at Istanbul Faculty of Law and entered the Archeology Department of Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography and graduated from this department in 1958. He worked as a lecturer at Princeton University, Department of Near Eastern Studies between 1958 and 1963. After his doctorate on "Kyma Rekta- Kyma Reversa in Hellenistic Period Anatolian Architecture", he returned to Turkey in 1963 and worked at METU Faculty of Architecture, Historical Monuments. He founded the Maintenance and Repair Department. Prof. has worked in many national and international organizations in the field of conservation. Dr. Cevat Erder served as a committee member in the ICOMOS Executive Committee for three terms; He became the director of ICCROM in 1981 and worked in Italy for 7 years, contributing to the creation and institutionalization of conservation-related programs in many countries. When he left office, he was given the title of "ICCROM Honorary President". Between 1974 and 1994, he taught as a guest lecturer in the Architectural Conservation Program of the University of Rome, which was carried out together with ICCROM. He has served as a member and manager in the ICOMOS Turkey National Committee, the International Architectural Photogrammetry Committee (CIPA), the ICOMOS International Education Committee, the Turkish Archaeologists Association, the Council of Europe, the Education Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage and the General Policy Committee for the Protection of Architectural Heritage. He took part in the METU Keban Project and Lower Euphrates Rescue Project, Mostar Bridge Reconstruction International Expert Committee; He served as a consultant on UNESCO's "Baghdad Regional Center Training Program for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage in the Arab Emirates" and "General Policy and Training Plan for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage in Algeria" projects. He won the ICOMOS "Pietro Gazzola" Award in 2003, the ICCROM Award in 1997, and the Aga Khan Award in 1986 for the restoration of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. In 1990, he was given the "Honorary Award of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Turkey" for his contributions to the protection of natural and cultural assets. Prof. Dr. Cevat Erder was promoted to the title of assistant professor on 26.06.1966, associate professor on 25.03.1971, and professor on 14.11.1976. Prof. Dr. Cevat Erder served as the Head of the Restoration Department of the Faculty of Architecture at our University between 14.09.1966 and 18.10.1973, and as the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture between 18.10.1977 and 06.11.1978. He retired from his position at our University on 19.01.1998.
