Developmental Outcomes Of External Mıigration: The Turkish Experience

1988
Ali S., Gitmez
With reference to the data on return migration and reintegration of Turkish workers , the study tries to demonstrate the outcomes of international and return migration, considering the earlier expactations concerning economic and social development via work emigration. Not considering the economic "cost-benefit" analysis of external migration, only the presumed contributions of emigration to the "development potential" of the home country is touched upon and certain individual outcomes are brought out for closer consideration. It is suggested that (a) the expectations of economic and social development via work emigration are essentially unrealistic, unattainable and do not deserve much attention; (b) external migration may improve the fortunes of migrants and their families, which is the only positive outcome; and (c) the macro and micro effects of migration do not match as they more often than not contradict one another.
