This paper attempts to determine the extent of the financial repression in the Turkish economy during the 1971-1985 period and evaluate the potency of the financial reform, initiated in 1980. The study finds out that the extent of the financial repression becomes significant after 1976. Another finding of the study is that the correlation between the ex ante real rate of interest and the nominal rate of interest is negative. As far as the potency of the 1980 financial reform is concerned, the study argues that the mitigation of the the high expected inflation rates is the crucial problem.
