This dissertation investigates the social network dynamics of energy projects funded under the EU's 7th Framework Programme (FP7) and Horizon 2020, using Social Network Analysis (SNA) to examine the evolution of collaboration networks and their impact on innovation. The study aims to identify significant changes in the characteristics of these projects, assess the influence of network structures on innovation outcomes, and evaluate the efficacy of the EU’s top-down approach to innovation policy. By comparing SNA results with conventional statistical analyses, the research provides a comprehensive understanding of how collaborative efforts within energy projects contribute to achieving the EU's ambitious renewable energy and efficiency targets. The findings highlight the importance of adapting policy frameworks to better address regional and sector-specific challenges, offering methodological insights for future research and policy design.
