The ultimate goal of this study is to answer the question of how open the Turkish society is in terms of man power flow among occupational groups. Using the data collected by population Studies Institute of Hacettepe University in 1968, the study investigated intergenerational and intragenerational accupational mobililty. Indexing mobility by using different statistical techniques is new in Turkish mobility litareture and will, hopefully, be beneficial for the students of social stratification. Comparison of mobility rates in Turkey with other countries is also provided in order to make the assesment of *where Turkeystands* easier, It was found that Turkey, contrary to the findings of previous studies, has a high level of social mobility, little more than half of which can be explained by structural changes, especially rural-to-urban migration and less than half of which originates from changes in the occupational system itself.
