An operational research project on fertility regulation was carried out in a rural area in Southern Turkey. In this article an attempt has been made to determine the relative importance of contraception vs. abortion upon fertility control behaviour of this population. The t tests comparisons of the mean lenght of time lived under protection by contraception or abortion implied that there was statistically significant differences in favour of abortion over contracep - tion. However in the younger cohorts such significances disappear. The article interprets this disappearence as a shift from abortion to contraception by the younger cohorts in fertility regulation behaviour. The inclusion of control variables into the analysis implied that this behavioural shift was completed in socioeconomically higher segments of the population but is still continuing in socio - economi cally lower segments of the population. The article also points out that all birth cohorts m!ake use of abortion more than contraception as a means of fertility regulation in their peak ages of fecundity. Ascription to decisive butnot to a probabalistic behavioral pattern «at the ages of highest fecundity by this rural population is also an interesting finding of the study.
