The underlying formal structure of preferential choice is well-founded. However, when dealing with empirical data, one often comes across situations which do not meet the requirements of the underlying formal structure. Among these structural irregularities is the inconsistency of preferences which can be defined as the observed variation in the scaling (rank ordering) of preferences. The paper attempts to specify the probabilistic laws governing the variations in question. The conclusion reached is that the variations tend to increase when the alternatives grows in number. The method utilized is based on ANOVA as applied to ranks.
