Buğra, Ayşe
This article, written in a period where the discipline of eco- nomics is marked by intense debates on methodoîogy related prob- lems, attempts to exp!ore the relevance of Kari Polanyi's critical contribution to economic studies. In Polanyi's work, the economy is perceived as an "instituted process embedded in society". Starting with this perception of the economy, Polanyi highlights the prob- lems of the Standard economic theory stemming from the artificia- lity of approaching the economy in isolation from the societal factors whicîı give the economic process its form, coherence and unity. As it is argued in the article, critical comments pointing at a similar direction are also found in the literatüre on the metho- doîogy of economics. The article suggests that Polanyi's ideas could provide a systematic evaluation of the current debates on the present state and the possible future orientation of the discipline.
