This paper preser;ts some of the findings of a study con- ducted on academic women in Jordan. The data, collected thr- ough in - depth interviewing of the subjects describes the social background characteristics, career histories, motivations, career commitments, role perceptions, role conflicts, attitudes on equ- ality and self - evaluations of a group of professional \vomen of unusual achie^ement in a basicalîy patriarchal, Müslim-Arab society. The study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the conditions and characteristics of "elite" women in a develop- ing society and to provide clues for the analysis of the nature and extent of the social change process.
