Up to now, little work has been done in Turkey estimating resource demand functions of farmers. This study deals with the demand for commercial fertilizer by farmers. The main purpose of this study is to estimate the demand functions for commercial fertilizer and to indicate the demand elasticity for it with respect to fertilizer price, farm incomes, and technological improvement. The major findings can be summarized as follows : Four main factors influence the amounts of fertilizer used by Turkish farmers. One of these factors is the amount of fertilizer used in the year before. If we wished to predict the total amount of fertilizer to be used next year, the amount used this year will be the best indicator. But, farmers do not use exactly the same amount of fertilizer every year. Thus, we need to investigate other reasons that cause farmers to change fertilizer use from the usual amount. The three important factors are the fertilizer price, farm incomes and knowledge as related to time. The results suggest that the relatively more important factors affecting fertilizer use over the next decade will be the fertilizer price and farm income. A further decline in the fertilizer price and, an increase in farm income would cause the greatest percentage increase in fertilizer use over the next decade in Turkish agriculture.
