ECONOMIC IMPACT OF AND DEMAND FOR TOURISM: A SURVEY

1991
Tansel, Aysıt
The economic impact of tourism industry and the demand for tourism are the two areas that are focused on in this survey. Tourism brings foreign exchange, generates additional income, employment and government revenue. The research of the 1960s overemphasized the contribution of tourism to economic development while that of the 1970s was marked by a pessimism in this regard. Computing tourism^ multiplier coefficient has been a very popular approach in analysing the economic impact of tourism. The procedure is extended to the computation of regional multipliers and differential multipliers for tourist types, as well. Studies dealing with the opportunity cost of developing the tourism industry are rather scarce. With regards to tourism demand, the early works were concerned with the computation of elasticities of demand and the effect of devaluations on tourism receipts. The tourism demand is found to be both income and price elastic. Recent works concentrate on the seasonality in tourism demand, capacity utilization issues, impact of socio-demographic characteristics on tourism demand and the inter-country and intra-region substitutability in the tourism industry.
