This paper reports the findings of a study on the determinants of male earnings differentials in the urban areas of Turkey in 1968 emphasizing its intergenerational aspects. The results of the study are based on the estimates derived from a simultaneous equation model with education, occupation and income as endogenous variables and family background, availability and quality of education, experience, places of past and present residence as exogeneous variables. The results suggest that while all the exogeneous variables studied with the exception of one are significant in explaining income differentials, family background effects represented by father's occupation and education are by far the key factors.
