in decision situations where the decision-maker considers a single objective or criterion, the decision problem can be translated into a search problem in which an "optimum" decision alternative is sought. When several objectives or criteria are present, however, decision alternatives must be judged on the basis of an n-tuple of criteria in which case no clear meaning can be attached to an alternative being optimum. It may indeed be argued that time decision problems are necessarily of this nature. In this paper, multiple criteria decision making methodologies, developed especially in the last fifteen years, are critically examined within a general framework proposed, and under two broad categories. A gradual move away from a purely prescriptive approach which has been traditional in operations research and management science, towards methodologies which incorporate the human decision making process is observed and emphasized.
