This is a part of our study on natîonalist periodicals in the Young Turk Era. The Genç Kalemler stood for linguistic nationa- lism, or simplification and purification of Ottoman Turkish. The purpose of simplification was, however, to maintain the unity of the Ottoman state. It was regarded as a more urgent problem than national integration of the Turks including Turkic peopîes under Russian rısle. The masterminds of the Genç Kalemler were greatly influenced by Ottoman patriotism (Osmanlıcılık or Tanzimatçı- lık) which aimed at construction of a pseudo-nation-state from among various subjects of the multi-national empire.
