CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF AUTONOMIST THEORIES WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

This thesis revisits the connection between the relations and forces of production, a hotly-debated topic in Marxism, within the context of artificial intelligence (AI). This debate acquired a new momentum when the autonomist tradition (name, operaismo, post-operaismo, cognitive capitalism) started claiming that capital impinging on labor through the development of productive forces makes the latter autonomous, and in the post-Fordist or cognitive phase of capitalism the Marxist labor theory of value has become obsolete and the seed of the transition to a communist society have been planted due to the substitution of machinery for living labor. Drawing attention to the invariants of capitalism, opponents of this claim suggest on the other side that Marx’s categories are still valid and the exploitative relations between capital and labor continue in new forms. This thesis aims to rethink these contending arguments within the context of the rapid introduction of AI in capitalist production in recent years. For, the current prophecies on the implications of the intensive use of AI in capitalist production tend to vindicate autonomists’ remark on Marx’s predictions. This thesis takes attention to the importance of the arguments of the critiques of autonomism, which reiterate on the contrary that AI, as a component of productive forces rather than a pure technology, will not completely replace human beings, will not make the law of value obsolete, and will not make labor autonomous from capital but reinforce exploitation.
