This study proviides both a perspective for evaluation and ıa set of empirical fiııdings on the effec- tiveness of instructional media in rural areas. Using a unique set of data obtained from a research study conducted on the use of instructional media in rural Colombia, the study demonstrates that non-formal ins- truction can be at least as effective as other forms of occupational training in providing practical infor- mation and more effective than that of equivalent formal education. In terms of conventional forms of learning non-formal instruction does have a statisti- cally significant effect on family achievement, yet this effect is not as large as that attained from the presence of family members with a primary school education.
