The first part of the paper examines the characteristics of the agro-food systems in industrialized and developing countries. Following this ovetview, the Mediterranean food consumption patterns are compared to the international trends. The second part of the paper studies the food consumption patterns and nutrition intake in Turkey. This is done by analyzing the levels and trends in production, consumption and regional distribution of main foodstuffs. The paper concludes that after an improvement in the food situation in the 70's, there has been a general deterioration in the early 80s. It is argued thai one can speak not of insufficient food intake, but of food imbalance, and social distribution rather than size of growth in agricultural production is required for the solution of the problem.
