Interleaving is a well-known technique used to reduce current ripples in multiphase Boost converters where each phase is operated under symmetric conditions. Interleaving can be employed in Boost converters having asymmetric operating conditions such as different input voltage source or load. This study investigates the effectiveness of interleaving in Boost converters having independent inputs and paralleled outputs. Current ripple reduction in the common output capacitor is analytically obtained for asymmetric interleaved Boost converters designed for Vehicle-Integrated Photovoltaics (VIPV) applications. Experimental results show that current ripple of the common output capacitor can be minimized when the phase-shift angle is adjusted properly according to asymmetric operating conditions. In addition, it is experimentally shown that circuit parasitics seriously affect the current ripple waveform, yet interleaving can still be employed to minimize current ripple of the common output capacitor.
