This thesis investigates the role of inclusivity within contemporary arts centers and further focuses on arts centers’ contribution to social sustainability. The initial discussion on inclusiveness in the realm of social sustainability began in the 1970s and became influential for many disciplines including architecture. Inclusivity mainly aims to foster equal opportunities for all individuals regardless their backgrounds while engaging fully in societal aspects. This thesis studies its role based on the frameworks that the tripartite models of the sustainability offers, specifically within arts centers. The main goal for the inquiry is to understand how it contributes to social sustainability through arts centers’ architecture and program. Even though the architectural discourse puts an emphasis on sustainability, there is still a significant gap in the practical implementation of its social aspect and inclusivity, especially in cultural institutions. The study traces the evolution of museums into contemporary arts centers to contextualize the architectural and programmatic shifts which shaped these institutions towards greater inclusivity. CerModern Arts Center in Ankara, one of the leading institutions in Turkey, serves as the main case study to provide an analysis of the relationship between arts centers and inclusivity principles. By evaluating CerModern’s architectural design, spaces, events and mission, the research offers insights about whether CerModern promote inclusivity. The findings, derived from archival research and observational studies, provide new perspectives on how cultural institutions can more effectively integrate inclusivity principles, thereby creating more equitable and sustainable spaces.
