MOTHERS' AND FATHERS1 ASPIRATIONS FOR SCHOOLING: CONTRASTS BETWEEN DAUGHTERS AND SONS

One of the most obvious discrepancies in levels of education achieved throughout the world and particularly in developing countries is that between males and females. A number of variables have been studied in attempts to account for differences in educational attainment within groups. Included in many cases is the variable educational aspirations. Due to the especially strong hold of parental desires over Turkish youth, it is this variable which is being studied here. To grasp the causes of differences which are apparent between girls and boys, this study dwells on the background factors leading to expectations conducive to continued schooling. Using a sample of 3,461 men and 2,882 women from a national survey, separated into residential size strata, these questions are investigated. Mothers' and fathers' opinions about daughters' education are contrasted with those on sons' education. It is found that mothers' views are more strongly affected by their degree of emancipation than are fathers'. On the other hand, fathers' opinions are influenced by their own education more than mothers' opinions are
