This article intends to examine the effects of railway transportation on the hierarchy of centers in Western Anatolia. The study is mainly based on two maps, one showing the situation in the region in 1844 (just before the beginning of railway transportation era), the other showing the situation in 1914 (3 years after the completion of the whole railway system). These maps and the population data belonging to the period of 1844 -1914 are obtained from foreign sources. For the purpose of this study 4 types of centers are identified: © Fourth order centers (which have a population more than 10 000) © Third order centers (which have a population between 5-10 000) © Second order centers (which have a population between 2 -5 COO) © First order centers (which have a population less than 2 000) The numbers, sizes, geographical distributions of these centers and the distances between them are examined both for the years 1844 and 1914. The examination reveals that, after the completion of the railway network in Ihe region, the numbers and the sizes of the fourth and third order centers have increased and the distances between them have decreased, while such centers begin to form an even distribution through the region. These findings are tried to be explained in connection with the changes in the economic structure of the region, which are the results of the cheap, fast and easy transportation facilities.
