The development of sustainable transportation systems within university campuses presents a complex and multifaceted challenge, often characterized as a wicked problem. This study aims to address this challenge by developing sustainable transportation intervention areas for Middle East Technical University (METU) campus through the Transition Design approach. Transition Design emphasizes systemic thinking, stakeholder engagement, and envisioning desirable futures, making it particularly suited for tackling complex problems. This doctoral study aims to identify the current commuting behaviors of METU campus stakeholders, as well as their experiences, needs, and desires regarding the existing transportation system. Additionally, it seeks to pinpoint the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of the current system through in-depth questioning of stakeholders. These insights form the basis for multiple solution suggestions generated through collaborative brainstorming sessions. By involving users affected by these transportation issues, the study develops propositions at both micro (individual behavior) and macro (systemic infrastructure) levels. These propositions are created in a participatory manner, ensuring solutions are grounded in real-world experiences and needs. Finally, variables and factors derived from previous insights are evaluated by experts with strategic roles in METU transportation planning. Their assessments are further analyzed using cross-impact analysis to uncover interdependencies and leverage points, which are then used to develop final sustainable transportation intervention areas for METU campus. The study concludes with the proposal of short, mid, and long-term interventions. Addressing this comprehensive problem through stakeholder engagement and utilizing Transition Design approach demonstrates a significant model for holistically tackling issues in densely populated communities like university campuses.
