MUTLU, Servet
A conceptual analysis of agglomerative factors and an cmpiri- cal investigation of population and concentration trends in Turkey are offered by functional groups of centers. During the I%0-1985 period. there has been increasing concentration of population as nıeasured by the Ilcrftndahl index. The settlements at the upper levels of the spatial hierarchy have shown consistently highcr rates of growth than those at the lower levels. A large number of low order centers experienced negative growth rates during 1975-1985. The loss of importance of first order-rural- centers seenıs inevitable in the light of increasing rural incomes, shifts in demand strueture and developments in transportation technology. Rural population would best be served and economic effıciency inereased il the second order centers were strengthened by the provision of better infrastrueture, better transportation network and year-round acces- sibility.
