The connection between humans and computational approaches has increased significantly in various fields throughout the time. Nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) receives greater attention when it comes to these computational approaches and engages with humans in extended areas in their daily lives. While AI tools aid in the design processes with handling different tasks ranging from research to presentation, there is still an ongoing discussion of whether they are useful or harming the designer especially when it comes to creativity, diversity, and such. In the meantime, they could be great resources when it comes to creating new ideas from scratch and faster to synthesize the data, which is the skeleton of the design process. In this research it is aimed to see the different perspectives of designers and understand whether these AI tools benefit designers in the design thinking process and how they change their behavior while being used. The research was conducted in two phases. The first phase consisted of a survey sent out to 3004 professional designers, on their usage of AI tools within the design process. 103 survey replies were received, 88 of them mentioned using AI tools actively in their design processes. In the second phase, a protocol analysis study was conducted with 10 professional designers selected from among the survey respondents. Each designer was given the same design task and encouraged to use AI tools to finish their design process within approximately 60 minutes. The results indicate that designers keep different attitudes, communication styles and use various methods with AI tools while they try to manage the task.
