This thesis examines the complex relationship between climate change and regional instability in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), by focusing on Syria, and assesses the European Union's approach to this nexus. The European Union’s reaction is examined through its policies and strategic frameworks, such as the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), highlighting its securitization of climate issues as part of its broader security and foreign policy objectives. Through a detailed analysis of reports and policy documents, the thesis assesses how the EU has engaged in the MENA region and securitized the climate. In this context, this study focuses on the Union's efforts to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change while promoting regional stability and cooperation. The study underlines the EU's dual approach of addressing urgent humanitarian needs and supporting long-term resilience through sustainable improvement and environmental cooperation. This comprehensive analysis provides insights into the assessment of the effectiveness of the EU's strategies and policies in managing the complex interplay between climate change and security in the Middle East.
