Environmental issues present significant global challenges that impact both humanity and the planet. Human behavior plays a crucial role in worsening these challenges. Research indicates that games can effectively promote pro-environmental behaviors (PEB), and designing games offers an alternative approach with its own advantages. While playing games to encourage PEB has been explored, there is limited knowledge on how game design itself influences PEB. This research aims to investigate the potential of game design in promoting PEB. To achieve this goal, the study includes an exploratory game design study, a primary game design study, and semi-structured interviews. The research identifies three key ways in which game design influences PEB: through knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. Additionally, it examines the roles of different activities within the game design process that affect PEB. Finally, the research identifies nine game design strategies and six game mechanics that can be utilized in game projects to promote PEB.
