Prof. Hayri Erten is the first Department Head of METU Mining Engineering Department. He served as Head of the Department between 1962-1967 and 1969-1976. Deputy General Director of MTA at the time, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sadrettin Alpan described the period regarding Hayri Erten's acceptance of the position as follows in his work titled "History of Mining Engineering Education in Turkey" prepared by Nadir Avşaroğlu: “During these studies, we stated the establishment of the mining department for the first time, but also the establishment and needs of the geology department. Parlar requested that someone from outside be trained to prepare the issue in more detail. In 1959, Mr. S.V. SOLVER was trained by the United Nations Fund to work at the University. His work Mr. SOLVER continued to cooperate closely with the executive committee, taking them into our discussions and holding joint meetings with PARLAR when necessary. Mr. When SOLVER finished its report, he presented the report and explained the importance and necessity of the Mining Department to the Deputy Rector, Mr. The late PARLAR invited me to the University to tell BURDELL. Mr. BURDELL asked the question why is it necessary? We explained to him that mining engineering education has just started in Turkey and that students who still speak English and can read books in foreign languages can only be educated here. Mr. BURDELL said that the mining department would be given priority. When it was decided to establish the mining department in 1960, the issue of who should be appointed as the head of the department arose. (I was elected as a member of the board of trustees in 1960.) We met with Parlar, and among the various candidates, we particularly focused on two candidates: "Hayri ERTEN and Kemal ÖZKAL". At that time, Kemal ÖZKAL was writing articles on "Submarine Fortification in Zonguldak" and was close to academic studies. But Kemal ÖZKAL started teaching part-time at the Technical University. Hayri ERTEN visited me and informed me that his work in Zonguldak was sufficient and that he wanted to leave. At that time, I was also the President of CENTO Mining Group. Hayri ERTEN attended CENTO meetings once or twice and put forward the idea of establishing a training center on Mine Safety. On this occasion, when I saw his closeness and interest in education, I offered Hayri ERTEN to Mr. PARLAR. Thus, the Board of Trustees, of which I am a member, approved Hayri ERTEN. Thus, the Mining Department became operational. After a while, the late Prof.Dr. Melih TOKAY left MTA and moved to METU.”
