Rural heritage places have been formed by the relationship between people and nature, including various cultural heritage in their built-environment and production cycles. Rural heritage places, especially those close to the city centers, may be exposed to extensive changes under the pressure of tourism. This transformation seriously damages the characteristics and values of rural heritage sites. Misi (Gümüştepe) Village (Mysia) in Bursa, Turkey is a historic rural settlement, hosted different civilizations, and contains traditional houses with local architectural characteristics. Due to its proximity to city center, it was exposed to tourism-led regeneration, especially with the impact of the Conservation Development Plan in 2007. Some historical housing structures in Misi Village were restored and refunctioned for tourism. Daily lives of the local people changed because of the transformations made on the axis of tourism and decrease in production, causing Misi Village gradually lost its rural character. Sustainable conservation strategies are necessary for Misi Village to maintain its natural, cultural, physical, social and economic characteristics. This thesis examines how the relationship between people, nature and culture can be strengthened in a sustainable way in rural heritage sites, considering the fact that change and tourism cannot be ignored for continuity and resilience. In this study, the past and current situation of Misi Village and changes it underwent by tourism-led regeneration in physical, environmental, social, cultural and economic aspects are analyzed and evaluated. Based on this analyses, sustainable conservation and tourism strategies for the protection of rural heritage site of Misi Village are developed.
