Prewar industrialization in Japan

1997
Grabowski, Richard
Prewar Japanese economic development was driven by rapid agricultural growth. The subsequent growth in income generated an industrialization process in which small firms and factories played an important role. However, these firms faced severe problems in penetrating foreign markets. Establishing a marketing network capable of export was subject to increasing returns to scale and scope. Thus the successful transition to becoming a manufactured good exporter involved solving a coordination problem. This coordination problem was solved through the interaction of both the state and individual entrepreneurs. Trading companies served as the institutional mechanism for the solution.
