The thesis explores typomorphology as a critical and generative field of study situated at the intersection of housing typology and urban morphology. Focusing on the often overlooked yet prevalent ordinary residential architecture that forms the majority of the urban fabric, the thesis argues for the relevance of typomorphology in theorizing these everyday urban environments and informing architectural and urban design practices. Through a genealogy of typomorphology, it traces the theoretical and methodological continuities and divergences within typomorphology from its inception in the mid-twentieth-century Italy to its contemporary interpretations in non-Western cities. By exploring the contributions of key figures, the thesis provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of typomorphology, drawing on an extensive literature review, personal interviews, and archival research.
