METU President Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kıcıman made the following statement on the university's start of the new academic year: "This year, our university is leaving behind a quarter-century of development and entering a new era. It will not be easy for Middle East Technical University to maintain its internationally distinguished place and its own dynamic characteristics in these very critical last nineteen years of the twentieth century. However, it is also a fact that we must definitely achieve the goals set by the Great Leader Atatürk during this period."
