The aim of the present author's 'Keban Socio-economic Study' is to analyse the economic, social, and political adjustments of the farmers, who will be displaced by the construction of the Dam, to their new conditions. The study is in two stages. The first, covering the period summer 1968 to summer 1971, attempts to determine and analyse the existing socio-economic structure with the help of sample survey involving the interviewing of 1098 heads of households in 98 settlements. The second stage, be ginning from the summer of 1972, i.e. when the displacement will have already taken place, will follow up the first stage of the study by an analysis of the readjustment process. The first stage of the research is now in the process of being completed. The article, published in Turkish, in this issue of the Journal, makes use of only a very small part of the collected data, namely, the summary of information related to land distribution. More definitive conclusions will only be arrived at after the comple tion of the study's first stage, and after the land question will have been analysed wit hin the whole context of the socio-economic structure
