The level crossing theory of random functions provides a convenient framework to evaluate the reliability of engineering systems which are subject to random environmental conditions. In this paper, the main results available for the level crossing problem of random processes and random fields are presented. Particular emphasis is given to the asymptotic results concerning the homogeneous Gaussian random functions. The effective use of these results is demonstrated in the formulation of the seismic reliability of an earth slope in the space-time domain.
