The relationship between education and fertility are studied in rural Turkey by using the 1975 Hacettepe Survey data. Fertility is found to be differentiating by women's educational attainment and more so by the level of female education of the community in which the respondents reside. The degree and the direction of the relationships between education and the intermediate variables of fertility, i.e. contraceptive use, and proportion married, change when considering education as an individual attribute or as a community characteristic. Hence, what is observed at the end is the critical combination of differential effects of education on fertility.
