William Godwin: The Forms and Limits of Utilitarian Social Criticism

Tunay, Muharrem
This paper intends to look into the structure of the liberal political theory through a study of William Godwin's moral and political philosophy. Godwin is not a crystallized example of those pioneers of this school of thought owing to his paradoxical views, but it is precisely these inconsistencies that reveal the immense variations in political thinking. Thus such a study not only shows the theoretical boundrics of the liberal political theory, and those of the utilitarian tradition, in particular, but also questions the plausibility of the common view that these two currents of thought are wholly unified in themselves.
