The synthesis and development of smaller-sized particles and nanostructured materials, in general, have been gaining attention since they provide higher surface area and a lower weight penalty. This is more pronounced with nanoscale particles in composites and surface area demanding applications (catalysis, cell scaffolds etc.). Electrospinning and electrostatic flocking, being two different fiber coating and production methods, aim to increase both the porosity and interaction area of the surfaces. However, they both have limitations in constructing directional 3D surfaces. Electrospinning offers various fiber synthesis options, whereas electrostatic flocking incorporates the orderly third dimension on the surface with challenges of the non-conductive polymeric fibers. This research aims to bring these methods together at different stages to create a surface fixed with submicron size polyamide 66 fibers attached perpendicular to a surface. There are four stages of the development: aligned fiber production by electrospinning, chopping fibers with a microtome, conductive surface coatings for fibers and electrostatic flocking of the finalized submicron flock fibers. Electrospinning of polyamide 66 is performed with formic acid-acetic acid solutions onto a plate collector and a cylindrical rotatingvi collector to gather directionally aligned fibrous mats. 25 kV voltage, 1 ml/h flow rate at 15 cm needle to tip distance with 2500 rpm of rotational speed was found to be sufficient for obtaining aligned electrospun mats. The diameter of the fibers were found to be 764 nm on average. Fiber cuttings to 5-100 µm ranged lengths are performed with a microtome by embedding samples into paraffin moulds. Graphene oxide and AlCl3.6H2O coatings were applied for the chopped fibers. Electrostatic flocking parameters were performed for the final versions of the short electrospun fibers.
