In the game development workflow, professionals with different roles and backgrounds get together to collaborate. Within this workflow, several tools and methods are used to enhance collaboration and overcome the communication gaps resulting from the involvement of diverse disciplines in teamwork. This study aims to examine these tools and methods to identify design intervention areas for the improvement and development of collaboration tools for game developers with a particular focus on “hypercasual” game development teams, which are interdisciplinary small teams comprising designers, artists, programmers, and other specialized roles. Therefore, it searches for the answers to the following questions: What content is communicated within the game development team? What are the benefits and shortcomings of the existing tools and/or methods? How can the communication and collaboration within the game development team be supported by design during the game development processes? The thesis responds to these questions with two-partite research consisting of semi-structured interviews and focus groups conducted with game developers. Interviews inquire about developers’ personal perspectives on the subject matter, while focus groups facilitate collaborative discussions among developers. Building on the analysis of both studies, it identifies the themes that will guide the design of new means of collaboration for mobile game development.
