Complex monopoles in the Georgi-Glashow-Chern-Simons model
Tekin, Bayram; Hosotani, Y (1999-02-01)
We investigate the three-dimensional Georgi-Glashow model with a Chern-Simons term. We find that there exist complex monopole solutions of finite action. They dominate the path integral and disorder the Higgs vacuum, but electric charges are not confined. Subtleties in the gauge-fixing procedure in the path integral and issues related to Gribov copies are noted. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
Prediction of the transient force subsequent to a liquid mass impact on an elbow of an initially voided line
Kayhan, Bülent Abbas; Bozkuş, Zafer; Department of Civil Engineering (2009)
The aim of the thesis, is to find the transient force applied by an individual transient liquid slug on an elbow at the end of a horizontal line due to an impact. The liquid slug is driven by pressurized air in a tank located upstream of the pipeline. The time dependent pressure distribution along the elbow and a vertical extension segment after the elbow was solved, with a 1-D numerical approach along a curved line mesh. For this purpose; firstly, a 3-D axial turbulent velocity profile function was assumed...

Feature extraction of honeybee forewings and hindlegs using image processing and active contours
Gönülşen, Ayşegül; Halıcı, Uğur; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2004)
Honeybees have a rich genetic diversity in Anatolia. This is reflected in the presence of numerous subspecies of honeybee in Turkey. In METU, Department of Biology, honeybee populations of different regions in Turkey are investigated in order to characterize population variation in these regions. A total of 23 length and angle features belonging to the honeybee hindlegs and forewings are measured in these studies using a microscope and a monitor. These measurements are carried out by placing rulers on the m...
Stability of carbon nanoonion C-20@C-60@C-240: Molecular dynamics simulations
Erkoç, Şakir (2002-03-01)
The structural stability of carbon nanoonion C-20@C-60@C-240 has been investigated by performing molecular dynamics computer simulations. Calculations have been realized by using an empirical many-body potential energy function for carbon. It has been found that carbon nanoonion is not so resistive against heat treatment, nor is it as strong as isolated single carbon nanoballs. Although single nanoballs resist heat treatment up to 4300 K, nanoonion disintegrates after 2600 K.
