Sub-idle performance estimation of gas turbine engines is challenging due to the lack of high-quality component performance rig data. Engine manufacturers heavily relied on engine testing to investigate this region of operation. However, the definition of safe and optimal starting, restarting, and shut-down procedures can be made more practically with the help of a numerical sub-idle engine model. Although it is one of the most popular topics in the gas turbine area through the 2020s, no robust and systematic method is available in the literature for estimating sub-idle characteristics in multi-stage turbomachinery without relying on starting or windmilling test data. For this purpose, this thesis aims to reach a specific method and guideline for sub-idle expansion of a specific performance model (above-idle model) of a gas turbine engine. Engine sub-idle behavior can be predicted correctly by using the suggested procedure provided in this thesis. Verification of the suggested method is accomplished with the aid of a demo turboshaft engine in addition to starting results available in the literature.
