This doctoral dissertation focuses on the development and validation of a sociopragmatic assessment tool for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Turkish academic contexts. Addressing the gap in pragmatic competence assessment, particularly in EFL settings, the study employed an argument-based validation framework to ensure the relevance, reliability, and applicability of the test. Through extensive item development and validation processes, the study identified common speech act situations among university students and professors, transforming them into both receptive and productive test formats. The tool was piloted across different proficiency levels, and a customized rubric was developed to evaluate sociopragmatic performance. Validation included item analysis, reliability testing, and expert evaluations, resulting in a refined, context-specific test. The findings contribute to the field by offering a practical, scalable tool for assessing sociopragmatic competence, facilitating formative evaluation, and supporting curriculum development. As one of the pioneering studies in Turkish EFL settings, this research provides valuable insights and a framework for future investigations in pragmatic test development.
