Retrofitting heritage buildings is more complex than other existing buildings due to conservation constraints, material variability, and limited data on heat and moisture behavior, along with exemptions from energy regulations. These buildings often suffer from poor energy performance due to age-related deterioration and restrictive legal frameworks limiting maintenance. Retrofitting ensures their continued use and conservation, requiring a carefully guided decision-making process that balances energy efficiency, heritage preservation, and user needs by integrating end-user perspectives, socio-cultural factors, and technical solutions. This thesis developed a decision-support methodological framework integrating heritage impact assessments with hygrothermal performance evaluations to guide moisture-safe energy retrofits in Türkiye’s hımış dwellings. Using wide-ranging investigation methods including site surveys, building inspection surveys, resident questionnaires, and environmental monitoring, the study mapped pre- and post-retrofit building performance simulations. Findings show that the application of whole-building unified insulation system in hımış building due to its hybrid structure, traps moisture in unheated zones. While targeted retrofitting of timber-framed areas enhances thermal performance and preserves heritage integrity. The framework acts as a decision-support tool for heritage-compatible energy retrofits in hybrid hımış traditional buildings. This study aims to lay the groundwork for a policy framework supporting the energy-efficient retrofitting of Türkiye’s traditional dwellings, with a focus on heating performance and indoor hygrothermal balance. Güdül is selected as the case study due to its cold climate, making it ideal for addressing heating challenges in hımış dwellings, and its well-preserved architectural heritage.
