Three essays on the impact of funding on research

This study explores the role of funding in research through three interconnected essays. The first essay investigates the impact of participation in the EU's Framework Programmes (FPs) on international scientific collaboration. Using a gravity model, the study finds that while FP participation positively influences co-publication, the impact varies over time. Cognitive and institutional proximity are crucial in fostering and sustaining collaboration between countries. The second essay assesses the influence of Japan's World Premier International Research Centres (WPI) Initiative on research output, interdisciplinarity, and international collaboration, using a bibliometric analysis of eight WPI centres. The analysis reveals that these centres have produced high-impact research and contributed to their host universities and Japan's research production. However, their sustainability beyond the initial funding period remains a challenge. The findings emphasise the importance of diversified funding sources, organisational support, and strategic planning in sustaining long-term research excellence. The third essay examines the impact of funding, academic hierarchy, and diversity on research production across universities in six countries. The study finds that while external funding enhances research output, its effectiveness is shaped by institutional context. Flatter hierarchies and international faculty diversity foster scientific productivity, while excessive administrative expansion may divert resources from core research activities. The essay thus highlights the need for strategic alignment between funding policies and organisational structures to optimise research productivity and impact. Collectively, these essays provide insights into the relationship between funding and research, contributing to policy discussions on designing funding mechanisms that balance performance, inclusivity, and sustainable research development.
