Tourism is a major industry for many countries worldwide and plays an important role in developing countries. Since the 1980s, many developing countries have implemented tourism-friendly policies to become one of the preferred touristic destinations of the world. Uzbekistan has always been a well-known tourist destination. Even during the Soviet era, many visitors used to visit Uzbekistan to see the rich cultural heritage of the country. When Shavkat Mirziyoyev became the president of Uzbekistan in 2016, following the death of the country‘s first president, Islam Karimov, economic policy, and ultimately tourism policy, began to take a different course. After he was elected president, the Mirziyoyev administration immediately declared tourism as a strategic sector and started to implement policies to make Uzbekistan one of the favorite tourist destinations in the world. It can be argued that there is a link between the economic policies pursued by countries and the tourism policies pursued in the same countries. Countries tend to reflect their preferred economic model in their tourism policies. In other words, the state's approach to political economy in some way shapes the tourism development policies implemented in these states. States that play a crucial role in shaping economic policy tend to implement their tourism development policies through strong and state-directed institutions which are also called developmental state policies. Mirziyoyev administration has been using developmental state‘s tools for the development of tourism in Uzbekistan since December 2016.
