The study focuses on creating an educational tool supportive of timber construction training and practices designed in the form of ‘Serious Game in a Virtual Reality Environment’. Adapting such an innovative approach to training and learning in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) can be a promising step in rehabilitating the weaknesses in the professional education and professional competence of technicians, masters, and designers. By the study, an interactive VR training tool, namely WoodCraft VR Workshop, is designed and tested to better understand the potential and limitations of that technology. To assess the performance of this VR training tool, an experiment was conducted on vocational high school students, consisting of a control group trained via video training and an experiment group trained via VR training. The increase in technical knowledge gain was tested with a written exam before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the Video or VR training. The reliability of the data achieved was tested with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The observations and impressions during VR training were evaluated for the improvements of the VR training tool. The results show that VR training has a greater impact on the student’s technical knowledge gaining in terms of overall test scores and correct answer frequencies related to the learning outcomes of training content than Video training. VR training is more effective for the preparation step of hands-on training, and its common use should be encouraged for construction practice training.
