Ottoman architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries exhibits numerous examples of stone masonry buildings incorporating timber elements such as beams, tension rings, and tie beams. Visual analyses conducted by previous researchers suggest that these timber elements contribute positively to the structural integrity of these masonry structures. To verify the visual analyses conducted by previous researchers, further numerical engineering studies are necessary. Within this framework, this PhD thesis aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the timber elements used in 15th–16th century Ottoman buildings, with a particular focus on their structural relationship with masonry components such as walls, vaults, domes, and arches, and their contribution to overall structural integrity. To exemplify the construction techniques of the period, two traditional Ottoman bath buildings in Edirne were selected for detailed structural investigation with the method of nonlinear FEM, considering smeared mathematical models for masonry volumes while establishing friction surfaces between masonry and timber. Laboratory structural investigations were conducted on scaled masonry walls through in-plane testing and in-situ ambient vibration testing to verify the results of the FEM studies. Results from pushover and time-history analyses conducted with FEM were examined to assess the seismic performance of buildings with and without timber auxiliaries. During the comparative analysis of the FEM results, the strength of the timber connections, the intensity of the lintel rows, and the relationship of the timber elements with the masonry walls and architectural elements were considered. By numerically evaluating the contribution of timber elements to the horizontal structural performance of the analysed traditional Ottoman bath buildings, the study interprets the construction deficiencies and defects related to the original construction techniques of timber auxiliaries used in this type of structures.
