In the 1980s, as the Islamic women were involved in making the Islamic practices visible in the private and public spheres, they also made use of the components of Kemalist modernization in line with their worldviews without totally rejecting modernity. However, de-politicization and exclusion due to the türban problem following the ‘Process of 28 February’ have forced the well-educated pious women of the cities to question the patriarchal structures and practices of the secular state and the Islamist ideology, and opened the way for a quest for individuality. This study looks at the representatives of this novel form of pious women’s activism, with a claim to get involved in the democratization process and challenging gender inequalities. It underlines the issues in the Islamic-oriented women’s associations raised in the context of the reconstruction of the pious women’s identity, such as dilemmas of reformism, relationship to feminism, their place in the women’s movement and organizational capacity building. The views of the activist women in these associations on these issues and their perception of identities are analyzed.
